Aughton
House
Project Overview
Sustainable, ethical
and deeply liveable.
Aughton House in Bayswater is one of Studio Origami's most complete demonstrations of sustainable, ethical residential design. Certified as producing 83% less CO₂ than an average new home over its lifetime, the house proves that environmental responsibility and beautiful, generous family living are entirely compatible.
"I highly recommend Studio Origami. Izabela did a great job in taking our ideas and sketches and turning them into a wholly resolved and beautiful home. The whole process was very collaborative with plenty of communication." — Robin Campbell, Director of Eco Building Materials.
Concept
Open to the outdoors, connected to the neighbourhood — a home designed for sustainable living that doesn't compromise on warmth, light or community.
Open to the outdoors,
connected to the street.
The design was always influenced by sustainable living — a focus on creating a home that is open to the outdoors and functions well for the family. The elevated block with its northern aspect facing the street influenced the design to open the house toward the front, making connection to the street and neighbourhood a part of everyday living.
Space is organised with sleeping zones upstairs and a flexible ground floor that can be sectioned with a separate activity room using sliding doors. The pergola has been precisely adjusted to allow winter sun to penetrate while preventing summer overheating — a simple passive solar solution that works with Perth's climate rather than against it.
"Efficient design that makes a small space feel big and liveable, with a low carbon footprint." — Studio Origami
Local Marri timber benchtops, recycled glass tile splashback, concrete flooring downstairs and bamboo upstairs — every material choice was made with environmental ethics in mind. The home is a complete sustainable ecosystem: solar panels, 10kWh battery, rainwater tank, heat-pump hot water and heat-recovery ventilation working together to minimise the home's impact on the planet.
Sustainable features
built into every detail
83% Less CO₂
Certified as producing 83% less CO₂ than an average new home over its lifetime — one of the most environmentally responsible homes in Perth at the time of completion.
Solar + 10kWh Battery
Solar panels paired with a 10kWh LG battery — generating and storing clean energy to power the home and dramatically reduce grid reliance and energy bills.
Heat Recovery Ventilation
HRV system provides constant fresh filtered air while recovering heat energy — supporting healthy indoor air quality and reducing heating demand.
Passive Solar Pergola
Pergola precisely calibrated to Perth's sun path — allowing winter sun to pass through and warm the home while blocking summer overheating without mechanical systems.
Ethical Material Choices
Local Marri benchtops, recycled glass tile splashback, concrete flooring, bamboo upstairs — every material selected for its environmental ethics and longevity.
Complete Sustainable Ecosystem
Rainwater tank, heat-pump hot water (COP 3.9), double glazing, ceiling fans and HRV — a complete system where every element works together to minimise environmental impact.
