Concept

A self-sufficient home in the Perth Hills — where sustainability is not a feature but the core value from which every design decision flows.

Sustainability as the
core value.

The project targets best practices in sustainability through the integration of Passivhaus methodology — with the aim of providing year-round thermal comfort with minimal requirement for mechanical heating and cooling. The Perth Hills climate, with its distinct seasonal temperature range, makes this approach particularly powerful.

The mid-century modern aesthetic connects the home to its bushland setting — clean lines and generous glazing that frame the natural landscape while maintaining the thermal performance required for Passive House certification. The design works with the existing slab, reducing material waste and responding to the site's history.

Sustainability is not a feature added at the end — it is the core value from which every design decision in this home flows.

The Iter House demonstrates that a high-performing Passive House in the Perth Hills can be beautiful, considered and deeply connected to its landscape — proving that the world's most rigorous energy standard and exceptional architectural design are not competing values, but inseparable ones.

Performance & design features
built into every detail

Passive House Methodology

One of the world's most rigorous energy efficiency standards — providing year-round thermal comfort with minimal mechanical heating and cooling in the Perth Hills climate.

Mid-Century Modern Aesthetic

Clean horizontal lines, generous glazing and a considered material palette connect the home to its bushland setting while maintaining exceptional thermal performance.

Existing Slab Reuse

Designed on the existing slab — reducing material waste, embodied carbon and construction costs while responding thoughtfully to the site's history.

Perth Hills Climate Response

Specifically designed for the Perth Hills' distinct seasonal temperature range — warm summers and cool winters — with passive strategies providing comfort year-round.

Generous Block Integration

208m² of living space on a 2031m² block — a considered ratio that allows the home to sit within the landscape rather than dominate it.

Self-Sufficient Living

Designed to provide a self-sufficient living environment in the Perth Hills — reducing reliance on external energy sources and grid dependency.

Passive House design in the Perth Hills

The Iter House demonstrates that Passive House methodology can be applied to a Perth Hills setting — delivering year-round thermal comfort with minimal mechanical heating and cooling across the region's distinct seasonal temperature range. Warm summers and cool winters in the Hills make this approach particularly valuable.

Designed on an existing slab in Glen Forrest, this 208m² home on a 2031m² block proves that working with what's already on site reduces embodied carbon, construction cost and site disturbance — while delivering a home that performs to the world's most rigorous energy efficiency standard.
