Torrens Park
Passive House
Project Overview
Shaped by
the land.
Set within the leafy suburb of Torrens Park in Adelaide, this certified Passive House is a carefully considered response to a long, sloping site with an approximate three-metre fall across its length. Rather than resisting the natural topography, the design embraces it — resulting in a series of split levels that reduce excavation, minimise retaining, and create a dynamic spatial experience throughout the home.
The project is composed of two distinct building volumes — a primary residence and a secondary garage and studio. These are positioned along the length of the site and connected through landscaped outdoor spaces, forming a sequence of moments that blur the boundary between architecture and garden.
Concept
Rather than resisting the natural topography, the design embraces it — letting the land shape the architecture and the architecture celebrate the land.
Two volumes,
one connected landscape.
The planning is driven by orientation and performance. With a north-facing side aspect, the home is designed to maximise solar access — bringing natural light deep into the living spaces while maintaining privacy from neighbouring properties. Carefully positioned openings and planting strategies enhance outlook and create a strong visual connection to the landscape.
At the heart of the design is a series of outdoor rooms and courtyards that act as both spatial connectors and environmental buffers. These spaces support natural ventilation, capture cooling breezes from the south-east, and contribute to the home's overall thermal comfort — a passive environmental strategy that reduces reliance on mechanical systems.
Thoughtful design can transform constraints into opportunities — a sloping site becomes the architecture's greatest asset.
As a certified Passive House, the project achieves exceptional energy performance through a highly insulated building envelope, airtight construction, and a heat recovery ventilation system. This ensures a consistent indoor environment year-round — with minimal reliance on mechanical heating and cooling, and a level of thermal comfort that standard construction cannot match.
Materiality is restrained and timeless — allowing the architecture to sit comfortably within its natural Adelaide Hills context. The result is a home that is not only energy efficient, but deeply connected to its site.
Passive House features
built into every detail
Certified Passive House
Full Passive House certification — one of the most rigorous energy efficiency standards in the world, applied to Adelaide's temperate climate for year-round comfort.
Split-Level Site Response
Three-metre site fall embraced rather than resisted — split levels reduce excavation, minimise retaining walls and create a dynamic spatial experience throughout the home.
Two Connected Volumes
Primary residence and garage/studio positioned along the site length, connected through landscaped outdoor spaces that blur the boundary between architecture and garden.
Outdoor Rooms & Courtyards
A series of outdoor rooms and courtyards act as spatial connectors and environmental buffers — supporting natural ventilation and capturing south-east cooling breezes.
Heat Recovery Ventilation
HRV system ensures a consistent indoor environment year-round — fresh filtered air throughout with minimal mechanical heating and cooling demand.
High-Performance Envelope
Highly insulated, airtight construction eliminating thermal bridges — delivering exceptional energy performance and thermal comfort in all seasons.
Torrens Park · Adelaide · South Australia
Certified Passive House design in Adelaide, South Australia
The Torrens Park Passive House demonstrates that certified Passive House design can respond beautifully to challenging Australian sites — turning a sloping block into an architectural asset through split-level design that minimises earthworks and creates a dynamic spatial experience throughout the home.
Passive House certification requires an airtight building envelope, continuous insulation, thermal bridge-free detailing, high-performance glazing and mechanical heat recovery ventilation — all working together to deliver a consistent indoor climate year-round with up to 90% lower energy use than a standard Australian home.
