Oxley
House
Project Overview
A modern barn home
built to perform.
Set in the Perth Hills at Darlington, the Oxley House is a landmark project for Studio Origami — winning four industry awards including the HIA State and National Best Residential Design under $500k and Green Smart Project Home of the Year.
The design balances everyday livability with high energy efficiency, using a hybrid SIP panel construction system that lowered build costs by approximately 10% while delivering superior thermal performance.
Concept
Spaces easily converted to accommodate different purposes, with pools of sunlight reaching the home throughout.
A landmark Perth Hills home.
Built to be lived in.
The design was developed through multiple concepts to find the most cost-effective solution that works with the site — positioning the house to allow outdoor areas to collaborate with interiors. Colorbond cladding wraps over the first floor, covering gutters and downpipes in one of the carefully planned details that defines the home's character.
Subtle spatial distribution strikes a relationship between different zones and how they connect with each other. The home provides 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a central kitchen-dining area, separate living on the ground floor and a balcony — all within a considered 280m² footprint.
Using SIP panels in a hybrid way we managed to lower the cost of the build by approximately 10% — a major benefit without compromising on performance.
The Oxley House proved that a high-performing, award-winning home doesn't require unlimited budget — it requires thoughtful design, smart construction decisions and a clear vision from the start.

The Oxley House won four industry awards in 2018 — HIA Best Residential Design under $500k (State and National), Green Smart Project Home of the Year, and Commendation for Best Interior Design WA. It demonstrates that exceptional design, high energy efficiency and accessible budget are not mutually exclusive.
Built using SIP panels — Structural Insulated Panels — in a hybrid construction system, the Oxley House reduced build costs by approximately 10% while delivering superior thermal performance. SIP homes offer exceptional energy efficiency, faster construction and superior airtightness compared to standard timber frame. This approach is one Studio Origami continues to explore as a cost-effective path to high-performance homes in Perth and the Hills.
